Schools Funding Update

AWARDS FOR ALL ADOPTS A NEW COMMUNITY FOCUSED APPROACH
TO APPLICATIONS FROM SCHOOLS

Dear Colleague,

Awards for All England is a joint Lottery grants programme
that funds community based activities, making awards of up
to £5,000 to community based organisations, parish and
town councils, health bodies and schools. Awards for All
England is funded by the main four Lottery distributors in
England: Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund*, Heritage
Lottery Fund, and Sport England.

A review of our funding patterns shows that since the
Awards for All programme was launched in 1999, the
proportion of grant making going to schools has risen from
1% in 1999/2000 to 20% in 2003/04.

To be fair to all applicants in the future, from 1 April 2004
we are changing our policies for funding applications from
schools in England to bring these in line with all other
applicants.

The main changes are:

1. Ending of priority status for schools
2. Fee paying schools will no longer be funded
3. Schools and pupil referral units (except special schools)
should show an external focus in their application
4. Projects should take place out of school hours or in
lunch breaks
5. More scrutiny of template applications
6. Heads and Deputy Heads must sign
the application

We also have:

7. Less funding for sports based projects

This leaflet explains these changes.

Schools have been tremendously successful in applying to
the Awards for All programme so far and we hope, through
the advice you are able to offer to schools, to continue that
success in the future.
